Expanding the P.A.I.N. Project: Mary Maggic joins our institute
The first of three planned hackathons took place this May, marking the successful launch of this collaboration facilitated by the LBG Open Innovation in Science Center.
Artist Mary Maggic has joined our institute as Artist in Residence to collaborate on the P.A.I.N. project (PAIN is Personal and Interconnected with Nature). This interdisciplinary project is being developed for the Ars Electronica Festival and serves as a continuation of the 2025 PAIN project, further expanding its research and artistic reach. It is part of the overarching “Impact Initiative on Medicine, Arts & AI”, initiated by the LBG OIS Center in cooperation with Ars Electronica and the JKU Lift_C (Institute for Transformative Change).
The P.A.I.N. project is a joint initiative involving, among others, PhD student Ines Gerard-Ursin and postdoc Iker Núñez-Carpintero from our institute, as well as students, artists and programmers from around the world and is facilitated by Mathieu Mahve-Beydokhti from the LBG OIS Center.
Our institute successfully hosted PAIN HACKATHON #1 this May, bringing together nine guests from multiple institutes to accelerate progress on the P.A.I.N. project. The event fostered productive discussions around data visualization challenges and resulted in the formation of a new collaborative partnership, with a newly integrated front-end developer, Isra Viadest, and an AI technologist, Christian Stelmach, both joining the core team.
Building on the momentum from the hackathon, the team is advancing several workstreams, including data visualization, geospatial data analysis, and user experience design. The P.A.I.N. Collective has scheduled a series of follow-up meetings through June to ensure continued progress on project deliverables.
