The study introduces the “metabolic organ connectome,” a new method using whole-body PET scans to map the network of glucose metabolism between organs.
This network acts as a robust, systems-level biomarker for allostatic load—the body’s cumulative “wear and tear”. The team found that healthy individuals have dense metabolic networks, while declining health (e.g., inflammation, obesity, or cancer) is linked to sparser, more “disordered” networks.
